Safety hook for lifting tackle - has pawl and locking plate over open end of hook to prevent removal of sling until plate is released

The safety hook is used with lifting tackle to prevent inadvertent removal of a sling. It comprises a locking plate (6) turning on the same pivot (4) as the lifting eye (1) and a pwal catch (10) which prevents this action until released manually. The locking plate has one section (7) each side of the hook, joined by spacers (8, 9). On one of these (8) is the pawl, fitting between the plates and having a lip (10a) engaging a shoulder (1a) on the hook. A clearance at the top (a) and bottom (b) of the pawl must be closed by lifting the pawl before the latter can be swung free.
