Prepn. of a TiCl3 complex catalyst comprises redn. of TiCl4 with an organometallic cpd. to give a reduced solid material. This is contacted with a 2C chlorohydrocarbon and solid material recovered. The organometallic cpd. is pref. of formula RnA1X3-n (I) (where R is a 2-6C alkyl gp., X is halogen and n is 1-3), partic. AlEt3, AlEt2Cl and AlEtCl2. (I) is pref. used in an amt. of 1-5g. atoms Al per g- of Ti at -50 to +30 degrees C for 30 minutes to 5 hours. The chlorohydrocarbon is pref. used in an amt. of 0.2-3 moles per atome of Ti at 0-80 degrees C for 30 minutes to 40hours. Suitable chlorohydrocarbons are C2Cl6, C2HCl5, C2H2Cl4 and C2H4Cl2 and their mixt. Used for stereo-regular, or tactic, of alpha-olefins e.g. ethylene, propylene, butene-1 and 4-Me-pentene-1 to give high yields at a fast rate in the gas or liq. phases.
|
