A cigarette vending machine has a display lamp over one of the delivery drawers that flashes when the coins are inserted. This facility attracts a customer's attention to a new brand of cigarette. Typically, the machine (10) has a number of different brands (13) displayed behind a transparent cover (12). Coins are inserted through a slot (17) and the appropriate delivery drawer (11) pulled to extract the packet. The first coin inserted activates a miniature switch that closes a circuit across either a multivibrator or a motor-driven cam timer. The multivibrator or the cam timer causes periodic excitation of the display lamp (15).
