<p>Granules consisting of a metal oxide hydrate, opt with carbon, metal oxide and metal carbide, are prepared by precipitating a concentrated aque. soln. of one or more hydrolysable metal salts, whose hydroxide has a low water solubility, this soln. contg. finely divided carbon, by the simultaneous action of ammonia and heat, and then separating, washing and thermally treating the precipitated solids. The initial concentrated aqueous salt soln. is anion deficient. The salt is pref. uranyl nitrate and the oxide hydrate is uranium (IV) oxide hydrate. The use of the anion deficient solns. enables more concentrated uranyl nitrate solns. to be used.</p> |
