Synergistic algicide compsn. - contg. a dithiocarbamate cpd. and a benzimidazole deriv.

Compsn. contains (a) a cpd. of formula (I) and (b) a cpd. of formula (II), (III) or (IV). In the formulae, R1 is H or 1-4C alkyl; R2 is 1-4C alkyl, phenyl or -CnH2n-NR1-CS-SR3'; or R1+R2 is 2-6C alkylene; R3 is the cation of a non-ichthyotoxic (in)organic base or is -CS-NR1R2 or -S-CS-NR1R2; or R2+R3 is -CH2-NR4- - CH2-; R4 is 1-4C alkyl; R5 is H, -CO-NH-(1-4C alkyl) or (1-4C alkoxy)carbonyl; R6 is 12-18C alkyl or a 12-18C mono- or polyalkyl-phenyl residue; and R7 is 1-18C alkyl or norbornyl. Component (b) synergises the known algicidal activity of cpds. (I) so that excellent algicidal effect is obtained with lower concentrations of (I). Combinations can be used in e.g. swimming baths, aquaria circulating water in heat-exchange systems, and can be applied to surfaces (e.g. walls) subject to algal overgrowth. The combinations can also be incorporated into e.g. paints, textiles, (e.g. for fishing nets) and antifouling paints.
