The system transports and cleans dirty root crops, particularly sugarbeet, using water under pressure. The tubers are supported and conveyed on a series of water jets (3) inclined upwards in the travel direction, being suspended on the jets and simultaneously cleaned by them of adhering dirt and lightweight impurities such as leaves. Heavier dirt such as stones (7) falls clear in the opposite direction to the water jets. - There can be a series of water pipes (4) connected together and to a common source of water under pressure, arranged so as to form a grating (6). Each pipe has a number of water jet holes at intervals in a line running in its axial direction.
