The surface layer of pyrolytic carbon is not less than 0.05 mm thick. The whole electrode may be made of carbon or the surface layer may be deposited on a core of some other conducting material. The activation of the surface of the pyrolytic carbon layer is achieved by means of partial oxidation. A typical electrode may be made by heating an electrode body made of fine grain graphite in an atmosphere of propane at a partial pressure of 0.2 bar. A temperature of 1200 deg.C is reached. A pyrolytic layer of 60-80 mu thickness is formed which closes the surface pores of the graphite and increases its mechanical strength. Activation may take place at 850 deg.C in water vapour. |
