1488187 Flame-retardant polyester compositions BASF AG 21 Feb 1975 [22 Feb 1974] 7306/75 Heading C3R A moulding composition comprises a linear saturated polyester resin, e.g. polybutylene terephthalate; glass fibres to reinforce the resin; a fire-retardant and a particulate, waterinsoluble silicate having a bulk density of more than 100 g./l. and selected from kaolin, calcined kaolin, talc and bentonite particles and glass balls, the silicate preventing burning material dripping from the moulding composition when it comes into contact with an open flame. The water-insoluble silicate may be in the form of powder, granules, flakes, spheres or fibres having a length : diameter ratio less than 50 : 1, the maximum diameter of the particles being less than 40 Ám. The proportions by weight of the components of the composition are within the ranges 2 to 10% water-insoluble silicate, 10 to 60% glass fibres and 3 to 30% flame-retardant. An aromatic bromine compound or an adduct of a chlorine substituted cyclic diolefin with a cyclic unsaturated compound may be used as the flame-retardant with or without a synergistic compound, e.g. antimony trioxide, or a phosphorus flame-retardant may be used. The polybutylene terephthalate may be modified by replacement of up to 15% molar of the acid by another dicarboxylic acid and of up to 15% molar of the glycol component by another glycol, e.g. ethylene or propylene glycol. |
