The first cooling passage may also pass through the inner normal conductors. The first and second cooling passages are supplied with the coolant, e.g. liquid or cold gaseous He or H from a first refrigeration unit 12, and the further cooling passages, which are preferably in the form of a bath so that vaporization of the coolant provides a temperature transition, are supplied from a second refrigeration unit 33. Since the inner conductors will be at high potential, voltage transition elements 29, 30, 35, 40 are provided in the respective cooling paths, the paths being indicated by broken lines. Valves 16, 36, 38, 39 are controlled by temperature sensors, e.g. 45, 46 to maintain the temperatures of the inner and outer conductors constant. The signals from the sensor 45 have to pass via transducers 49 to overcome the potential drop. The coolant return line 25 may be situated about a radiation shield (not shown).
