The smelting of Cu-Fe-S or Ni-Fe-S ore concentrates is initiated by heating to between 1,200 DEG C and 1,300 DEG C to produce Cu2S and FeS, as well as S2, through a mixture of fuel, steam and oxidizing gas, such as 50 to 95% O2. The introduction of steam converts FeS to FeO and produces H2S, while the introduction of O2 converts FeS to FeO and produces SO2. The H2S produced tends to convert Fe3O4, as produced, to FeO. A siliceous flux or SiO2 reacts with FeO to produce a silicate slag.
|
