A novel mixture of acrylic monomers comprising (i) a compound having the general formula wherein one of R 11 and R 12 is an unsubstituted or substituted alkyl, aryl or cycloalkyl group and the other of R 11 and R 12 is a radical of the formula wherein R 21 is a hydrogen or halogen atom, or an unsubstituted or halosubstituted methyl or ethyl group, R 13 , R 14 , R 19 and R 20 are hydrogen atoms or unsubstituted or substituted alkyl, aryl or cycloalkyl groups, R 15 , R 16 , R 17 and R 18 are hydrogen atoms or alkyl, aryl or cycloalkyl groups and k, l, m, n, p and q are integers of from 0 to 5; (ii) a compound of the first general formula given above in which both of R 11 and R 12 are unsubstituted or substituted alkyl, aryl or cycloalkyl groups, and (iii) a compound of the formula wherein both R 22 and R 23 are radicals of the formula wherein R 24 is a hydrogen or halogen atom or an unsubstituted or halo-substituted methyl or ethyl radical, is prepared by reacting a compound of the formula with (a) acrylic acid, methacrylic acid or an acid anhydride or acid chloride thereof and (b) an aliphatic, alicyclic or aromatic monofunctional acid which is not polymerizable in itself such as acetic, butyric, benzoic and 2-ethylhexoic acids. The compounds (i), (ii) and (iii) are also claimed per se. The reaction is preferably carried out at a temperature of from 50‹ 150‹ C. in the presence of an acid catalyst and an inhibitor. |
