There is disclosed a process for the production of a refractory material which includes heating an intermediate material containing carbon to cause carbothermic reduction of a chemical substance within the intermediate material, wherein said intermediate material has been produced by heating a gel precipitated gel, and carbon in the intermediate material for the carbothermic reduction has been produced from gelling agent, or a derivative thereof, incorporated in the gel during gel precipitation. |
