A probe for monitoring deformations in subterraineous strata comprises a pair of discs on opposite faces of a pressurized chamber. The discs are covered by a pair of thin flexible metallic membranes. Ports are provided for allowing compressed air to enter and leave the chamber. The probe also includes a pair of electrical contacts which permit the emission of a control signal upon the deformation of the membranes. The probe has a rectangular horizontal cross section and is provided with a pointed base to facilitate location of the probe into the ground.
