Fire hydrant with inclined valve seat - has valve head wedged against seat by rod and guide plate

The fire hydrant (1) has a cylindrical body with a flange (5) for connecting to the water main. A vavle seat (7) at an angle 19 deg. to the vertical is formed around the junction of the branch pipe (3) with the body (1). The valve head (21) is wedged against the seat (7) by the action of the valve rod (60) and the vertical guide plate (70). The valve rod is supported in the upper flange of the body (1a) which also supports the rod (87) which operates the drain valve (81) in the base of the body. The design permits the removal of the valve head and rod assembly for routine inspection.
