1532483 Refining nickel mattes INCO Ltd 19 March 1976 [8 April 1975] 11190/76 Heading C 1A A process in which an impure nickel matte containing one or more of iron, copper, cobalt, lead, chromium, zinc, manganese, cadmium and tin as impurity is purified by selectively chlorinating the impurity metal or metals, dissolving the impurity metal chloride or chlorides in a molten salt comprising at least one alkali metal chloride, separating the impurity-bearing salt from the purified matte and separating the impurity from the impurity-bearing salt, is characterized by the steps of converting the impurity-bearing salt to solid fragments, leaching the fragments with an aqueous solution saturated with the alkali metal chloride or chlorides present in the salt and having a pH lower than 5 to dissolve out the impurity metal chloride or chlorides, and separating the resulting impurity-bearing aqueous solution from the purified salt. |
