Rotary engine has a piston rotor supported for rotation about a single axis (16) and an abutment supported for oscillation in' position between the rotor and a surrounding housing. The abutment may be of crescent form, the convex side (21) of that form being supported in a recess (33) of the housing. The tips (24) of the crescent slidably engage the piston which is lobe-shaped to rock the abutment so the latter is passed by the lobes. There must be at least one abutment and a piston having two lobes. Alternatively the abutments may rock on the piston and cooperate with a lobed housing.
