The flywheel provides low-pollution propulsion for city cars. Energy is stored by using the vehicle's engine to spin up a flywheel through a one-way clutch, the action being automatic when the flywheel speed drops. Stored energy can then drive the vehicle through a transmission of "infinitely variable" type. Normally the flywheel axis is upright but it can tilt fore and aft in the vehicle to allow gyroscopic precession during cornering. For short journeys the flywheel can be used as drive without using the car engine at all, by using an electric motor to "charge" the flywheel during rest periods in garage.
|
