Tundish having expendable liner inserts - made of combustible and opt. exothermic material

A tundish is provided with a lining of protective expendable material which is replaced after each pour of molten metal and is formed of shaped inserts of combustible material having a brown rate of consumability which is sufficiently long to complete a pour. The inserts fully protect the tundish from molten metal contact and preheating of the tundish is not required. After pouring, the tundish can be relined and put into service within 2-4 hrs., thus reducing the number of tundishes required. The inserts may be made of e.g. in one case a mixt. of 15 wt.% sawdust, 54 wt.% dolomite and 31 wt.% sodium silicate.
