The vehicles are guided sideways by a guide wire (12) which is laid along the roadway and through which a low-frequency alternating current flows. Two control cables (L1, L2) with the same amplitude (A) and wavelength lambda are arranged symmetrically with respect to the guide wire (12) offset with respect to one another by lambda /4. The control cables also have alternating current flowing through them, the frequency of the said current being expediently twice or three times as high as the frequency in the guide wire (12). As a result, a travelling wave is produced along the roadway, the wavelength of the said travelling wave being freely selectable within wide limits when the control cables are laid and it being possible for the speed of propagation of the said wave from a feed point to be controlled. This travelling wave is used to control the speed of the vehicles which are thus guided along the roadway at predetermined intervals. <IMAGE>
