Portable automatic measuring appts. for radiometric determn. of the protein content of foodstuffs is comprised of a radioactive beam source, a neutron filter and a moderator in an upper reservoir, a lower reservoir containing a detector surrounded by screening layers and separated by a moderator layer; and a sample chamber equipped with a feed channel for stepwise insertion of samples, and a recording device for recording the results. Measurement is relatively quick (20-30 mins); no chemical degradation of the sample occurs; the appts. can be used to measure relatively large samples (900-1000 kg); protein content is determined with an accuracy of bettern than 1.5%; appts. operates continuously for up to 24 hours without supervision; unit is portable and can be set up by non skilled personnel.
