1487390 Games racquet EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 22 Nov 1974 [24 Jan 1974] 50632/74 Heading A6D A games racquet includes fibre reinforced skins 26, 27 on respectively, opposed faces of the head and throat regions; those fibres in the head skins following the contour of the head, and those in the throat skins having at least half in cross-ply orientation, i.e. some oriented in a positive sense with respect to the racquet longitudinal axis, and the remainder oriented in a negative sense with respect thereto. As shown, a racquet is formed by the bonding of skin portions 26, 27 and pallets 24 to respectively the faces of the head frame 12 throat 19 and handle portion 17 of a one piece core member. Fibres in the head frame skins 26 are orientated to follow the contour of the frame whilst those in the throat portion 27 have up to 50% of fibres oriented along the core axis, the remainder having an orientation of between 25‹-45‹ preferably 30‹ therefrom. The core is preferably a wood laminate of Ash and Hickory, and the skins are preferably a continuous graphite fibrereinforced nylon resin though a number of suitable alternative core materials, resins and fibres are listed. Preferred ranges of resin/ fibre volume ratios and skin thickness are given and the handle may include a grip portion (not shown) of plastics or leather. The skins have faying surfaces roughened e.g. by sand blasting before bonding with an acrylic thermoset resin e.g. epoxy, within a specified temperature and pressure range; the head frame being undercut to allow overlap of the head and throat skins.
