1483766 Battery charge indicating systems ROBERT BOSCH GmbH 10 Oct 1974 [11 Oct 1973] 43877/74 Heading H2H A battery charging apparatus comprising a transformer having a primary and a secondary winding a rectifying device for rectifying the output of the transformer to provide a battery charging current, a control member for controlling the charging current and to provide a signal when the battery is being charged and a threshold switching device triggerable by the charging signal whereby to energize a charge lamp to indicate the charging of the battery. A device for charging a battery 16, particularly that of a road vehicle, comprises a transformerrectifier element 11 supplied from an A.C. source 10 and providing smoothed D.C. output 12, the battery 16 being charged therefrom by way of a control device 13 which includes a series connected transistor to regulate the charging current. Regulation of the transistor, and hence of the charging current, is effected by a signal voltage U x which is produced by a desired charging current value setting device 25 which is formed of two elements, viz: a battery polarity sensor 18 and a voltage sensing unit 21, the device 25 operating in such a manner that the signal U x is a function of the charging voltage U a which is applied to the battery 16. The control device 13 also produces a signal U s whenever the device 13 has charging current flowing therethrough and this signal is used to energize a device 23 consisting of a charge indicating lamp which is illuminated whilst the battery 16 is being charged. The sensor 18 comprises a pair of reverse-parallel connected diodes which sense the battery polarity to thereby protect the charging apparatus from damage should the battery be incorrectly connected. |
