Organic N and/or O contg. cpds. (I) are used to inhibit the spontaneous ignition of hydrogen phosphide arising from hydrolysable phosphides is new. Ca, Mg and Al phosphides are used as pesticides. They react with H2O in the atmosphere to produce hydrogen phosphide which gases animal pests. This reaction takes place so readily that there is a danger of spontaneous ignition taking place (e.g. during storage. Spontaneous ignition does not occur when the hydrolysis takes place in the presence of (I).
