The offset trapezoidal bucket is for use on back acting trench excavators, is mounted on oblique flange brackets, and has a movable side wall. The system enables the machine to avoid trench side obstacles such as trees and telegraph poles. The machine advances continuously along a path which is offset and parallel to the trench line and the brackets are welded obliquely onto the carrier beam to provide bucket support. The movable side wall is displaced by hydraulics and may be controlled from the operator's cab.
