Regeneration of loaded activated carbon - using desorber with heated tubes through which carbon passes and recycle of gases

Activated carbon or coke granules are reactivated by heating them in a vessel through which they are passed. In the lower part they are cooled and drawn off as cooled granules. In the upper section the flow is split into a number of small streams. These are then heated by contact with walls heated by a hot gas stream. Some of the regeneration gas formed is recycled back to the bed and flows up through the heated zone. In the lower zone, cold inert gas is recycled to cool the carbon. An excess of approx. 5% of the vol. of regeneration gas is injected as inert gas to ensure that there is always a net flow from the cold to the hot zone. Used for reactivating carbon esp. when leaded with SO2.
