After reduction of the lead content in the petrol in many piston internal combustion engines or after repeated face grinding of the bearing surface of the cylinder head, the intention was to reduce the compression ratio without increasing the thickness of the cylinder head gasket. For this purpose a distance piece, composed of a metal material, is firmly joined by means of a two-component adhesive, for example an epoxy-resin adhesive, and under applied pressure to the cleaned underside of the cylinder head or to the cleaned upper side of the cylinder block.
