Fixing water-soluble modifier in polyacrylonitrile threads - by treating gelled threads with aq. soln. of modifier in water-soluble form and conversion to water-insoluble form

Dry- or wet-spun polyacrylonitrile threads or fibres contg. an embedded modifier (I) which is difficulty soluble in water and which contains at least one functional gp. which can be converted into a water-soluble form, are prepd. by (a) treating the threads, in the gel state, with an aq. soln. of (I) in the water-soluble form; followed by (b) treatment with an aq. medium to convert (I) into the difficulty water-soluble form. The modifier is not removed from the fibres may washing. The polymer contains >=40 (>=85)wt.% acrylonitrile. (I) is esp. a flame-proofing agent, antistatic, or agent for improving the dye acceptability or the hydrophilic property of the fibres. The functional gps. in (I) are esp. acid or basic gps.
