A square, in partic. a carpenters square with a long and a short arm is designed to be simply and economically produced and to have non-rigid arms. It can be mass produced. The short and long arms are resilient and consists of flat steel plates of consistant rectangular cross-sectional profile. They are welded together. The plate thickness is pref. 1.75 millimetres, lying between 1.4 and 1.9 millimetres. The short plate is resistance welded to a part of the long plate and the joined arms reground in the region of the weld.
