The coin handling mechanism is especially for coin operated vending machines or other mechanisms, to accept coins which have been tested and sorted into denominations in an earlier part of the mechanism, and to hold them for later collection or for re-issue as change. The coins are collected in a vertical tubular case (1) with its base closed by a rotating cylindrical body (3) having its axis of rotation (4) outside and parallel to the coin column. The coins are fed in at the base of the column through an inline (6) so that they enter a spiral groove (7) in the cylindrical body (3) and are carried up to the base of the coin column by the rotation of the cylinder.
