In a vehicle rack and pinion steering gear, the pinion 2 is supported on one side of the rack 3 by a ball 15 and socket 6 universal mounting and on the other side of the rack by a bearing 7 movable in a plane normal to the plane of the rack and containing the rotational axis of the pinion 2, a spring 7a acting on the bearing 7 to urge the pinion 2 into mesh with the rack 3, and the pinion 2 is driven from a steering shaft 9 via reduction gearing 12, 13, the gear-wheel 13 being formed about the socket 6 with its central radial plane passing through or near the centre 16 of the ball 15. The ends of the teeth of gear-wheel 13 may be rounded as at 13a, or the profile of the gear-wheel may be barrelled. |
