PRODUCTION OF POLYHYDRIC ALCOHOLS AND CYCLIC ETHERS

A two-step method is provided for preparing polyols from compounds containing one six-membered acetal ring and one aldehyde functional group wherein the acetal is first hydrogenated in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst and then hydrolyzed and hydrogenated in the presence of a water insoluble strongly acid ion exchange resin and a hydrogenation catalyst.
