The length/ cross-sectional ratio of the lower portion is such as to avoid capillary effect. The lower portion communicates with the stem through passage means formed at the floor of the socket. As shown in Fig. 3 the upper and lower portions 84, 85 communicate with a recess 88 in the floor 76. A gallery 78 may be formed at the valve seat end of the socket. The shoulders between the portions may slope inwardly Fig. 15 (not shown). The groove(s) may be of triangular cross-section Fig. 7 (not shown). The valve stem may be fixed in the socket. The floor passage may be formed by providing a stop for the end of the valve stem, Fig. 18 (not shown). The arrangement and dimensioning of the two portions of the groove(s) allows residual material in the grooves to flow into the floor well by gravity when the valve is closed.</p> |
