The electrode has a substantially uniform cross-section in a direction perpendicular to the planar surface. The positive and negative materials may be the components of a bimetal alloy (e.g. Cu-Al) in the form of a cylindrical core surrounded by the inert material. Alternatively the core may be either positive or negative material surrounded by the material of opposite polarity via the intermediary of a layer of the inert material and optionally having an outer inert peripheral coating. In Figs. 4 and 5 a polygonal negative plate 16 carries positive electrode elements 17-20 at its corners, these being surrounded and interconnected by inert material 21, 23-26. |
