1408279 Electrodepositable composition VIANOVA KUNSTHARZ AG 8 Nov 1972 [8 Nov 1971] 51541/72 Headings C3P C3B and C3R [Also in Division C7] An electrodeposition paint comprises an electrodepositable water-soluble binder and an at least partially soluble complex of a metal salt with ammonia. Preferred complexes are those of phosphates or chromates of metals of Groups Ib, IIb and VIII, particularly zinc phosphate. The use of phosphates of copper, zinc, cadmium and, for comparison, aluminium (which does not form a complex) is also described. The paint may also contain chromates of non-complex-forming metals such as strontium and pigments, fillers and solvents. It may be formed by adding the preformed complex to the binder, which is neutralized with excess ammonia or an amine, or by neutralizing a mixture of the binder and the metal salt with ammonia. The exemplified binders are a polybutadiene-maleic anhydride adduct, a thermosetting epoxy resin ester and a polyester derived from 1,2-propylene glycol, pentaerythritol and a maleinized mixture of rosin, tall oil fatty acids, linseed oil, dehydrated castor oil and tung oil as described in Specification 1,166,249. |
