The auto retracting pelmet (2, 3) is designed for installation where there is insufficient space between the window frame and the ceiling for a fixed pelmet. It is pivoted into the retracted position by the head of a side hung opening light (6) as it pivots open. The pelmet is of inverted 'L' section with lateral end walls and mounted on a butt hinge (11,13) so as to pivot about a horizontal axis (9). The axis of rotation (9) is in the ceiling plane, parallel to the window opening and offset inside the room relative to the vertical pelmet panel (2). A magnetic contact lock may be used to hold the pelmet closed and retraction rotation is initiated by the leading corner (A) of the frame (6) or the opening light.
