A heald return mechanism for a loom controlled by a jacquard mechanism includes elastic cords connected at one end to a base plate and at the other end to the heald wires by a connecting wire. Two base plates are arranged forwardly and backwardly of the vertical plane of the heald wires, and the connecting wires deviate around a guide so that alternate heald wires are connected to elastic cords connected to the two different base plates. The length of the elastic cords is increased, allowing the loom to operate at high speeds to produce either a plain or piled woven fabric.
