Dental compsns. contg. chlorhexidine to inhibit plaque formation - with foaming and/or sweetening agent of tested compatibility

A dentrifrice compsn. comprises as antibacterial agent 1,6-di-(p-chlorophenyl-biguanido)hexane (otherwise chlorohexidine) or its salt and an excipient which contains >=1 foaming agent and/or >=1 sweetening agent compatible with the antibacterial agent. The compatibility is determined by micro-biological test to ensure that the minimum inhibiting concn. of the agent plus additive(s) is at least equal to the minimum inhibiting concn. of the agent or its own. The compsn. is used in tooth pastes etc to remove or present the formation of dental plaque. The compsn. and testing procedure ensures that an effective amt. of agent is present unlike previous compsns. in which it has been found that other additives, esp. those above, reduce the efficicacy of the agent.
