Aromatic phosphorus derivs. prodn. - by reacting alkyl phosphites with activated aromatic halides, useful as intermediates for aromatic phosphonic acids (BE 17.8.77)

Aromatic phosphorus cpds. of formula (I) in which A and B (same or different) are OR, -NR2 or R; R is an opt. substd. alkyl, alkenyl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl gp.; and Ar is an aromatic gp. bound to the phosphorus atom via a C atom in the aryl gp., which contains an atom or gp. which exerts an electron-attracting effect on this C atom, are made by reacting a P cpd. YP(A)B (II) in which Y = OR or NR2, and X = halogen, with an aromatic halide Ar-X in the presence of Cu or a Cu cpd. The reaction takes place under relatively mild conditions. No special precautions need be taken when adding the alkyl phosphite. The release of the alkyl halide need not be monitored and the reaction is effective with a wide range of aromatic halides having gps. which only weakly activate the halogen atom.
