In the method, during spraying a part, for example 30 %, of the exhaust air is mixed with the supply air stream and, during the times between spraying, up to 100 % of the exhaust air is used as supply air in the system. Considerable savings in heating costs can be made thereby. The exhaust air flows through coarse filters (52), band filters (51, 52) and, after it leaves a fan (9), is directed by a flap (32) entirely or partly, depending on operating requirements, into a supply air duct (24). Fresh air sucked in by the fan (8) is preheated via a plate heat exchanger (42) around which the exhaust air flows and is heated together with the admixed exhaust air in an air heater (40) in order then to be blown into the work space (1). The position of the flap (32) can be controlled completely automatically by the operation of the spraying device and by the measuring equipment indicating the air composition. The filters (51, 52) replace the scrubbing device used hitherto. <IMAGE>
