The dimerisation of not >10C olefins comprises mixing olefin(s) with a binary catalyst composed of (A) organo-Al cpd. of formula: RnAlX3-n (I) (where R is 8C alkyl; X is halogen; n=1 or 2) and (B) a copolymer contg. polyvinyl-pyridine sequences to which is complexed an (in)organic Ni salt, the mol. ratio of organo-Al cpd./Ni salt being 1:100, pref. 1:10 and the mixing being effected in a (halo)-hydrocarbon solvent, at -20 ot +100 degrees C and 1-45 atmos. pressure. (B) is a graft copolymer, which swells in the solvents of natural rubber, of 60-99.5% rubber with 0.5-40% of a vinyl pyridine, e.g. 4-, 2- or 3-vinylpyridine, in an opt. halogenated hydrocarbon solvent at 40-70 degrees C. The resulting copolymer is then cross-linked, and reacted with the Ni salt in the above solvent at 10-50 degrees C. The product is then washed with the solvent to remove any traces of unreacted Ni salt. |
