The propelling pencil has a lead clamping-and advance unit. The clamp for the lead is connected with a lead store and a press button, and is pre-tensioned indirectly by a spring via a movable sleeve, and a housing-shaped tension element. The front (16) of the tension element (10) engages on a body-sided stop (17), and is charged at the rear by a pre-tensioned spring (15), which resists normal writing tension. The element is sprung relative to the pencil body (1) by the amount (a) of a normal lead advance, and there is a stop (20) for the return movement. The body tip (2) has a section (21) which is displaceable by a multiple of the lead advance against a lead brake (26).
