The household step ladder has a platform panel on which the user can stand securely. The platform is provided in a set place at the top. The platform step is in the form of an independent component (6) which can be easily detached from the ladder (1). A panel fits onto the ladder stringers (2) or rungs (3-5), and a support attached to this (16) with its bottom end (18) seated on the stringers or on a rung. The panel edge (7-10) may protrude downwards and be worked into two opposite cutouts (11) for engagement by the rung (4) serving as seating.
