High-strength, slightly agglomerated formed coke is produced in a horizontal-chamber coke oven battery charged with fine low-quality coal particles which have been screened to is not >1.5 mm size. The mixt. of fines has an agglomeration property (AP) index of >=75, a max. average reflectance of >=1.2% and an expansion/contraction ratio of -2% to +5% during a coking process at a heating rate of 5 degrees C/min. The fines are mixed with an agglutinant and pressed to briquettes of dumb-bell shape before they are charged into the coke oven battery. This produces a formed coke of satisfactory quality for blast furnaces. No difficulties arise during the pushing of the coke cake because the outer parts near the heating walls are not too firmly agglomerated nor are the inner parts left loose. Its permeability resistance in a blast furnace is lower than for conventional form coke. |
