The retractable and extendable support which exhibits a high carrying capacity but limited weight is formed by the interlocking of two bands of elastically deformable metal sheet. both bands (1, 2) are in the form of coils. At least one of the bands (1) has hooking catches (9) along its edge in which the edges of the other band can releasably engage. One band (2) is flat while the other (1) has an arched form between the hooking catches so as to stiffen the assembled support in the longitudinal direction. The flat band has uniformly distributed apertures in its surface.
