1277954 Compacting metal powders FEDER- AL MOGUL CORP 26 Sept 1969 [26 Nov 1968] 47559/69 Heading B5A [Also in Division C7] A hot pressing process for metal and alloy powders e.g. Co and Ni super alloys in which the powder is packed in a metal container which is evacuated, sealed, heated e.g. to 2000-2200‹ F. and then pressed in a die so that the periphery of the container and the powder deforms axially into the space formed by the clearance between the die wall and the punch. A clearance space may also be formed between the bottom punch and the die wall and the core pin and the punches. As shown in Fig. 3 the metal powder is packed in a steel or stainless steel container 12, evacuated, heated and compacted in die 32 by axial movement of top punch 36. The less dense peripheral portion is extruded into clearance space 50 to form an annular lip which, with the container, is removed by pickling or machining. Top and bottom punches may be used (Fig. 4, not shown) and annular components using a core pin may be formed (Figs. 5-8, not shown). |
