Complexes (I) are produced by reacting a Co or V salt with quinolinic acid (II) and urea in the presence of boric acid (III) and ammonium molybdate (IV) in a liq. medium at elevated temp., the reaction is carried out at a press. of 3.52-70.3 atmos. gauge.In an example, a dispersion of (III), (IV), CO(II) chloride, (II) and urea in trichlorobenzene was heated 4 h at 221 degrees C and 6.33 atmos. gauge. A 70.9% yield of a prod. contg. 7.3 wt.% Co was obtd.(I) are useful as catalysts for the oxidn. of mercap and and mercaptides to disulphides, esp. for the oxidative treatment of hydrocarbon distillates contg. S and aq. liquors used for the desulphurisation of hydrocarbons. The yield is increased considerably, esp. for the Co cpd., when high press. is used
