1485997 Winches BARWIN PTY Ltd 8 Nov 1974 [12 Nov 1973] 48435/74 Heading B8B [Also in Division F2] A manually operable winch comprises a winch drum 7 rotatable in a clockwise direction at various gear ratios depending on the direction of rotation of an operating handle 10 and the position of a gear selector control plate 16. Upon the latter being rotated into its clockwise position relative to the drum, a first gear ratio is selected whereby clockwise rotation of the handle produces equal speed of the drum, and anti-clockwise rotation of the handle causes the drum to continue clockwise rotation at an intermediate lower speed relative to the handle, this anti-clockwise rotation of the handle causing the plate 16 to be urged into its anti-clockwise position to select a second gear ratio which becomes effective when the handle is next rotated clockwise. With clockwise rotation of the handle, the second gear ratio produces the lowest drum speed relative to the handle, the said intermediate lower speed being obtained if the handle is again rotated anti-clockwise. The handle 10 is splined at 12 to a drum shaft 9 which is splined at 22, 23 to a ratchet ring 21, the latter engaging pawls 24, 25 hinged to the drum 7 when the handle is rotated clockwise and the plate 16 is in the first gear position which is a clockwise limit position of the plate 16 relative to studs 17, 18 mounted on the drum and extending through arcuate slots 19, 20 in the plate 16. Anti-clockwise rotation of the handle 10 causes the ring 21 to override the pawls and the drum is driven via reduction gearing 13, 14, 15. During anti-clockwise rotation of the ring 21, it is axially moved towards the control plate 16 by interengaging cams 33 on the ring 21 and cams 37 on a plate 34, whereby spring loaded balls 36 on the ring 21 engage recesses 35 on the plate 16 to move the latter into its second gear, anticlockwise position relative to the studs 17, 18 where it is spring biased away from the drum and prevents re-engagement of the pawls 24, 25 with the ring 21 when the handle 10 is subsequently rotated clockwise again, to facilitate drum driving through the lowest gear of the gearing 13, 14, 15. |
