1434399 Alkenylbenzenes TEIJIN Ltd 16 Aug 1973 [19 Feb 1973] 38851/73 Heading C5E Alkenylbenzenes are produced by reacting an alkylbenzene with 1,3-butadiene at elevated temperature in the presence of an alkali metal catalyst which consists of (1) 0À0005 to 0À03 wt. per cent K (based on the alkylbenzene) and (2) metallic sodium in an amount determined by the relationship 0À25-0À59 Î # Na # 0À0005 where x is the amount of metallic potassium in wt. per cent. The alkali metals may be in the form of a mixture but are preferably in alloy form. The catalyst may be used supported on a carrier such as graphite, Na 2 O, K 2 O, CaO, MgO, BaO, NaCl, KF, KCl, KBr, Na 2 CO 3 , K 2 CO 3 , SiO 2 , Al 2 O 3 and Fe. Suitable starting materials contain up to 4 C 1 -C 3 alkyl substituents. The reaction may be carried out at 90-200‹ C. using a butadiene : alkylbenzene molar ratio of 0À001-0À4 : 1. Examples describe the preparation of 5-tolylpentene-2 from xylenes, 5-phenylpentene-2 from toluene and 2- phenyl-hexene-4 from ethylbenzene.
|
