<p>A rotary shaft seal is characterized by a buffer compartment filled with fluid maintained at a pressure which equals or exceeds the pressures along the shaft with which the seal is associated. The relatively high buffer pressure within the seal is effective to prevent passage of material along the shaft from one side of the seal to the other.</p>
