The combined anchor plate and chip breaker (10) is for fixing a cutting insert (15, 17) on the head (16) of a tool holder. A bolt (12) through the axis of the plate (10) and the insert (15, 17) fixes the assembly to the tool head (16) and provides a rapidly demountable arrangement. The insert (15, 17) locates flush in a channel in the tool head (16), and the anchor plate (10) presses it into the channel. The size of the anchor plate (10) is such that it bears on both the upper part of the insert and the adjacent flush surfaces of the tool head (16), and it is prevented from rotating by a wedge (13) between its flanks and a step in the tool head. The base may have an annular bearing surface, and the lower lateral edges comprise flats (11) which are engaged by the wedge.
